We had a wonderful time this weekend. Lots of little things going on, and a big thing or two.
Mike plowed and tilled the (late) garden early Saturday morning. The garden area ended being about 30 ft. x 50 ft.

Then we went to Clark’s Feed and Seed to pick up everything we needed because, no, we aren’t organized enough right now to have done that already. But we knew what we wanted, and picked the perfect day to go. We didn’t know it before we got there, but it was customer appreciation day, so there were grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, live music and lots of plants and seeds to choose from. From the smells of food grilling, little kids running around with ketchup smeared faces and people in lawn chairs soaking up the warm rays as they listened to the music…there was summer in the air for sure. You couldn’t be there without feeling happy and full of anticipation for the summer months to come.
Maybe that’s why we went a little crazy. We ended up planting 19 tomato plants (2 large varieties, a couple cherry and a couple of grape), green bell peppers, jalepenos and cayenne peppers, green lima beans, purple hull peas, field peas, radishes, corn, squash (yellow summer and zucchini), onion sets, watermelons and canteloups. I got mint (to plant in pots, learned that lesson years ago), Sweet Basil (can’t cook without it in the summer) and Lemon Thyme that will be planted this week. I have Rosemary at the old house that I will be bringing up here as well. That, and a few daisies and marigolds…that’s about it, probably forgot something. But that’s enough, right?? I know, we’re nuts, but I can’t wait to harvest and put up food for the winter, as well as having fresh vegetables to cook all summer. We’ll be a little busy, for sure.
We’ve been seeing a few hummingbirds around, so we finally got the feeders up.

I made an old fashioned chocolate cake with delicious homemade icing that I got from Chickens in the Road. Suzanne’s a rockin’ cook. There’s no cake mix that can compare to a cake baked from scratch.

Saw a few critters, including this little surprise that slithered under our particle board sidewalk as Mike was coming in the front door.

I have to say, we both hit the wall this evening, it was quite a full weekend. After a nice dinner we relaxed in the hot tub and marveled at how awesome the stars look in the country sky.
We’re still liking it out here.

So glad you’re marveling… that’s the best part about home.
WOW, what a harvest you will have in August and September…… and will you make barriers so the deer, rabits, racoons, etc. won’t eat everything first??
Just a thought…..love reading your blog!

We will have to do something I think to keep things out. Haven’t decided how to do it yet…we have a pretty good deterent when we’re home – 90 lbs of German Shepherd / Lab mix, but he’s not always out there
. I do think the word may have gotten around the deer community though, there aren’t as many around as there were when we moved in.
Thanks
What a lovely garden plot. I am looking forward to seeing it bloom!
You’re going to have lots of food! I guess you could can it. Though I’ve never done so.

Oh, I’m so happy you’re both buzzing around your new place and soaking it all in! I’ve moved a lot of times in my life, and it seems there is a sort of honeymoon period of absorbing a place..and what a wonderful place you have!
SO happy for you guys!
