I finished college at 44 years old. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when I finished high school. I graduated from a very small country school that didn’t really have much in the way of a counseling department, so no one ever discussed my options with me or encouraged me…couple that with the fact that I had 3 siblings and a stay-at-home mom and no savings for college, I never dreamed that college would even be an option for me. IF I had even known what I wanted to do. So I worked in a factory for a bit, then I got a job as a secretary for a family friend. I decided to give college a try at the urging of my husband. I still didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but I thought I’d get the basics out of the way and figure it out. Eighteen years later I graduated
. Going to school while working full time, raising 2 children, coaching soccer, etc. can make for a long college experience. Meanwhile, I had some very good job opportunities along the way, and people that took a chance on me, and ended up with a very good career long before I graduated. It was a great sense of accomplishment (and RELIEF), and it most certainly has helped in the workplace.
