My mother married my stepfather, who was in the Army, when I was 3 years old. We immediately moved to Ft. Bragg, N.C., where we remained for 2 years. From there we went to SHAPE, in Rocquencourt in the Versailles suburb of Paris, France, where we were stationed for 3 years. I started school there, and went through the 3rd grade before returning to the States. I went on to attend 7 schools between 1st and 8th grade. My father retired when I was 14, and we moved back to Alabama, where I finished high school. There are people here now that are my age that still hang out with their childhood friends, friends they have had since elementary school or before. I can’t even imagine that. I am a bit of an introvert and am slow to make real friends, which I think I can attribute to always being on the move, having to make new acquaintances every year. At the same time, I experienced a lot of things and places that a lot of people never get to experience, and I don’t regret that for one minute.
